Hello All

Wishing you all a healthy and prosperous 2021 and we hope you have been able to spend some time with loved ones over the holidays. A few things coming up in January which we wanted to share and your opportunity to get more involved through our October Books review show.

Firlstly though, an update on our pre-Christmas sales and our current opening hours. We had incredible support before Christmas with many people buying all their presents from us and many, many new online customers. The launch of Bookshop.org , the online book buying service for independent bookshops also brought in some additional income. All this has meant we have had a bumper December with some reserves in the account to see us through the leaner times at the start of the year.

We are back to reduced hours in January (Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat 10 til 4pm) and with some workers on furlough, thankfully something we had planned well in advance of all the Covid related changes over the Christmas period. We are also back to food only sales in the shop and collection or delivery of books and one customer only in the shop at any time. We want these measures to continue to protect you and to keep us healthy and safe too.

On the cultural and creative theme, we are excited to announce that we are planning an October Books review show for when we can get together again. We are asking you if you would like to create a song, play, poem or story to be performed later in the year. More details  below.

Thank you all for your continued support during these times

Warmest regards
Clare, Jamie, Jess, Jaquie, Amy and Jonny

Submission call

Calling all writers and performers!
At October Books, we know this past year has been a trying one – but as we shift into one (hopefully) final Lockdown we’re asking you, our valued supporters, to help us put on a Community event celebrating the leap forward to a new way of being together. We’re asking for submissions of songs, poetry, drama, and fiction to help us usher in the eventual end of Lockdown! What did you Love, Loathe, and Learn? We want to hear your experiences, whatever they may be.

Submit your finest work: it can be about anything, and as funny (or not) as you’d like. The best submissions will be selected to be a part of a live event welcoming people back into the shop, the community, and life together again!

We really appreciate the support our community has provided over the last year, and we’re so excited to work on this with you. The best submissions will be selected and workshopped, with their authors invited (although not required) to perform as part of our Welcome Back event.
The deadline for submissions is Friday 12th of February, 2021, so why not exercise your creative side and spend this lockdown polishing off your best work?
Send Submissions to info@octoberbooks.org using the subject heading OB reveiw, detailing the type of submission (Fiction, Poetry, Drama, or Music), along with your name, and contact information.

Submission Guidelines:
Fiction: 1, 500 words (5 Minutes)
Poetry: 2 Poems, or 40 Lines (5 Minutes)
Drama: 10 – 15 Minutes
