A flight over The Common in August 1912!
Found this postcard of the pioneer French aviator Monsieur Henri Salmet flying his Bleriot monoplane over Southampton Common in August 1912. Bleriot himself made the first ever flight across the Channel in 1909 and that local pioneer Edwin Moon took his first flight in 1910. Given that planes were still very new, it seems somewhat surprising that all the onlookers are looking in the wrong direction! The flight was part of a nationwide aero tour by Samet to promote aviation which was sponsored by the Daily Mail. For more on Henri Salmet see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Salmet.
