Our bats and path lighting experiments on The Common are coming along well; we have now completed the first 2 of 8 weeks worth of data collection, running experiments at each of 2 unlit sites on The Common, with another 6 sites to go over the next couple of months. At each site we are recording bat calls and observing bat behaviour for the first 3.5 hours after sunset on each of 3 nights; 1 night unlit, 1 night with standard white LED path lighting, 1 night with a new red-based LED path lighting.

A massive thanks to our team of volunteers so far; Izzy, Liberty, Ben, Michael, Jenni, Kesta, Rosie 2, Pauline and Ivan, and to Rosie H (whose MSc dissertation is coming from the project) and Dave from SCF, both of whom will be out every night of the project. Great teamwork has really speeded up the safe setting up and taking down all of the equipment.

This week, there has been cloud cover so it has been quite warm, but for the first week we had clear skies and the temperature plummeted every night.

The data is starting to be analysed and we hope to be able to post some of the results and recordings as we go along.

So if you are out on The Common at night and see a glow where you are not expecting to see path lighting, it is probably us. Do come and say hello and find out more.
