Northern Shovelers can be seen on the Cemetery Lake on the Common. They forage in shallow wetlands, coastal marshes, flooded fields, lakes, and sewage lagoons. They nest along the margins of wetlands or in neighbouring grassy areas.
They often have their heads down in shallow wetlands, busily sweeping their flat shaped bills from side to side, filtering out aquatic invertebrates and seeds from the water
