“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” – F.Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Hello all,
August is here, and we’re enjoying seeing your Summer reading choices flooding in! There’s lots to tell you about this month, so off we go…

Extended opening hours
We’re delighted to take a significant step closer to normality, by extending our opening hours. Roll on the Summer! Whether you’d like to browse our shelves for some inspirational reading material, or collect your customer order, we’ll be happy to see you!

Mon / Wed / Fri / Sat from 10am – 4pm.

You can see the measures we are taking to ensure your safety here.
Safety remains our priority, and our meet-and-greeters will still be on hand to answer any questions you might have. Don’t forget your face covering if you’re popping by – this is now mandatory in all shops. Please do check the blog on our website for further announcements.

If you’re not out and about yet, please do keep ordering with us online. We love hearing from you, even if we can’t see you in person just yet!

We are hiring!
In July we waved a teary goodbye to long-standing member of the team Joey Jones as he embarks on his PhD. He’s been a true asset to the team and we’ll miss all he has brought to the table. We know that many of you too will miss his extensive book knowledge and assistance when you’ve been in the shop!
Accordingly, as of August 2020, we are looking to expand the team here at October Books. We’d like to welcome in a new person who can bring their talents, experience and enthusiasm to help this much-loved Southampton business continue to grow and flourish.
We are looking for a long-term commitment from someone with experience in business or financial management who is passionate about the future of October Books and its place in the wider community. (Please note – this is not a shop floor retail position.)
If this is sounds like a challenge you could sink your teeth into, you can find out more about what this role requires and how to apply here.

Opportunities for Members
If you are a Member of October Books, you will have received your monthly newsletter with all of your Members news. We are looking to expand the Committee with the addition of a Treasurer and Co-Chair to help us with the decision-making and strategy going forwards. If you’re a Member and would like to become more involved in what we do here at October Books, we’d love to hear from you.
If you’re not a member, but would like to become one you can find out how to do so here.
Due to the covid19 health crisis we’ve had shorter opening hours and fewer people able to be on the shop floor at any one time. This has meant we’ve not been able to welcome as many volunteers as we would have liked! But you’ll be pleased to know we are slowly bringing voluntary roles back into what we do – in a safe and measured way.
If you have tech knowledge and would like to volunteer with us we’d really appreciate a regular Tech Volunteer.
This role could involve anything from setting up a Youtube channel for recordings of our events, to helping us troubleshoot tech issues within the shop, to maintenance and advice. Drop us a line!

Phew! After all that I feel like we deserve a sit down in the sunshine with a good book!
Don’t forget to check out our varied events coming up in August (and beyond) – you’ll need to register your interest if you’d like to attend. See you there?

Love from the OB Team xx
