A Message from the Chair…

Chair’s Blog

“As Chair of HRA I’m delighted to welcome you to the relaunched website designed for us by Ross Gordon of Two Rox Design who will also be our Webmaster.

The HRA Committee has felt for some time that our website needed updating and refreshing. Electronic communication has now reached the point where an organisation without an efficient, interesting and accessible website will struggle. We are delighted with Ross’s work. We hope and expect that, together with our existing electronic database of members’ contact details, the new site will enable us to improve the frequency, the timeliness and the effectiveness of the Association’s communications. In particular, my Chair’s blog will include reports of the regular Committee meetings and other HRA events (in the meantime you should refer to the Committee Bulletin just below this). Incidentally, if you are a member who has not yet joined the database, you should communicate directly with our Website Manager, Nadine Johnson at highfieldracomms@gmail.com. And if you are not yet an HRA member, now is an excellent time to join: click here for an application form.

The new site is radically different from the old one. It contains a number of interesting features. These include a Search Engine, archives for all major posts, a Days Gone By page, a Building Bridges page, a Planning page, and a Police Update page. Also, the Local Business Directory has been considerably expanded. I should particularly like to draw your attention to the new Members Features Page, where we welcome features from our members such as competitions, articles, photos or anything else relating to the area or HRA. But all the work of designing and establishing the new site will be lost unless members make full use of it and contribute material on a regular basis. We therefore welcome all news and information that is relevant to the Association and its aims. In the first instance, please send any material to Nadine at highfieldracomms@gmail.com.

Do you have photographs of Highfield, past or present? We are running a competition to choose the best ones for our website. These should be sent to Nadine in jpeg format as soon as they are available, and no later than 31 May. All offerings will be gratefully acknowledged. We shall also be very interested to receive material for our Days Gone By feature about events or experiences in the past from people who have lived here for a while or who have longstanding connections with Highfield or Portswood. Nadine will also be very pleased to receive any comments about the site. HRA owes Nadine an immense debt of gratitude for all the hours of work she has put into the new and greatly improved site.

Finally, we are very conscious of the need to reflect the interests of the wider community. We are therefore hoping to be able to continue to produce our well regarded printed Newsletter on a regular basis so that both members and non-members can be kept informed about the work of the Association and wider developments in the area. However the website and e-mail database will be our main regular means of communication with members and the wider public. We very much want it to be a success. Together, I am sure it will be.”

Roger Brown, Chair HRA
