City-wide excitement as the Southampton UK City of Culture Bid 2025 goes in!

On Wednesday 7th February we submitted the bid document to become UK City of Culture 2025. To mark the occasion the Bargate monument was lit up and good luck messages poured in from across Southampton and Sotonians (more on these stories below).There are currently 8 locations – Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Bradford, Cornwall, County Durham, Derby, Stirling and Wrexham County Borough and Southampton. The team are now busy with preparations for the short-listing of the final four locations due to be announced this Spring.Thank you for your support so far, the best way to continue supporting Southampton to a win is following our social channels and making some noise about Southampton deserving to become UK City of Culture 2025 @southampton2025 and #MakeitSO.
Imagine May 2025, the opening of our year as UK City of Culture, should our bid be successful.  With tens of thousands of people from the city and beyond, all invited to join in a spectacular opening celebration on land, sea and air.

Celebrating Southampton’s national and international partnerships, creative producers Crying Out Loud will produce a giant circus show with a difference; featuring aerialists from all across the UK, alongside French circus company Gratte Ciel, to present a high-flying vision in the skies above Southampton’s Weston Shore.

We are so proud to announce two new local ambassadors, supporting Southampton’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2025. Both Don John, founder of Black History Month in Southampton, and Lynda Walton, volunteer Community Rep for Holyrood Estate, are joining the list of Southampton 2025 local ambassadors.

Don John said: “Southampton is one of those places that gives you the capacity to really sort of engage with these issues and engage with people in the city, and thankfully I’ve been given an opportunity to make that happen.”

Lynda Walton said: “Because I’m Southampton born and bred, the motivation for my voluntary work comes from having a love of the residents and the city. ”

Drawn from different parts of the city and representing the diverse voices and cultures from across Southampton.  These local ambassadors join with the bid’s increasing cohort of local and national ambassadors including Craig David MBE, Bill Woodrow, Charlotte Edwards CBE, Baroness Floella Benjamin, Jenny Packham, Kate Prince MBE, Lawrie McMenemy MBE and Zakir Hussian.

Southampton Football club is proudly supporting Southampton’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2025. The launch of a new campaign, At One Behind the Bid, is highlighting the significance of football within the cultural landscape of the city and its people.

The club has shown its backing for the bid previously, with first captain James Ward-Prowse becoming a Southampton 2025 ambassador. Watch his ambassador video here.Saints Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl said: “On behalf of all at Southampton Football Club, I’d like to wish Southampton the best of luck in its bid to become UK City of Culture 2025. I know winning the bid would mean so much to the city, so myself and all the team are backing it all the way”

Gemma Nichols, Commercial and Marketing Director for Southampton 2025’s UK City of Culture bid, said: “We are delighted to have the support from Southampton Football Club for our bid to become UK City of Culture 2025. Football is a huge part of Southampton’s culture, therefore the backing of the Club is a key component to the bid.

“We hope that through this campaign the pride of the Saints fans will shine through showcasing the spirit of our city and it’s winning ambitions to become UK City of Culture 2025.”
