HRA News Bulletin – 14th July 2014

  • This is a note of the main items discussed at the HRA Committee on 14th July 2014.
Progress is continuing with the revamped website; in the meantime the email database is being used as the main means of communication with members together with the printed Newsletters, for which we are continuing to seek commercial sponsorship. It was noted that to maximise security we might need to obtain our own laptop once the new site is live.
  • The HMO survey is also progressing. Simon Hill will circulate a list of streets still not covered. Anyone who has information about HMOs in their roads who has not yet been approached should get in touch with Simon.
  • The Building Bridges social event with the Southampton University Students Union is still planned for Friday 26th September at the Students’ Union. All members will be invited.
It was reported that Julia Brooking, a former Vice Chair, was gravely ill but would welcome visitors. It was agreed that a message of sympathy and some flowers should be sent to her on behalf of the Committee.
  • Simon Hill drew the Committee’s attention to the progressive afforestation of the Common and the implications for users. It was agreed that this should be the subject of a fuller discussion at the next main meeting. In the meantime Simon is progressing plans for work to clear parts of Lover’s Walk.
  • A number of current planning cases were reported. It was noted that one possible outcome of Council consideration of the Scrutiny Panel report on HMOs and enforcement was a renewed interest in Neighbourhood Plans. The new Planning and Rights of Way panel arrangements were being carefully monitored.
  • Both membership numbers and finances were healthy.
  • It was reported that our current police community engagement officer, Michelle Shalahan, would be succeeded by Virginie Freval from the start of August. It was agreed that we should send a message of appreciation and best wishes to Michelle and an invitation to Virgine to attend our next meeting, which will be on 8th September.
