Important message from Superintendent Alison Heydari, Southampton

Please see the below message from Superintendent Alison Heydari.

Dear All,

As you are all aware there has been widespread UK and international media coverage of the Brussels attacks yesterday following the tragic deaths of at least 34 people and injury to over 250 others from blasts that hit Zaventem airport and Maelbeek metro station near EU headquarters.

There is no current evidence to say this was a targeted attack towards a particular group, though clearly aimed at the heart of the European Union and travel hubs.

Whilst this will continue to dominate the UK news broadcasts and wider media coverage, I wanted to contact you to recognise that I understand these all too often tragic events have an impact much closer to home.

Sadly our community might have family, friends or loved ones caught up in this or there may be some other impact from the days, weeks and months ahead.

Locally I recognise it is crucial that the effects of this incident are factored into our day-to-day response.  Identifying hate crime is a priority and in the aftermath of an event like this it is likely that these incidents are more likely to occur – we need to be prepared to respond to them.

Southampton is home to multi-faith and multi-culture communities and we need to ensure ALL residents feel reassured and safe.

I value the relationship we have and our most effective response is to work together so we can protect & reassure our communities.  To that end, please could I ask for your help in reporting any extraordinary tensions or concerns and as ever; remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

In the event of an incident, National Police Chief Council advice is to –

Stay safe – think about your own and the public’s safety

See – what is happening and where

Tell – communicate, describe incident / type of weapon

Act – stay safe, update, observe / contain

Many thanks for your help.

Regards,

Alison Heydari BSc (Hons), MSc, PGCE, MCMI
