“In early June the world of leaf and blade and flowers explodes, and every sunset is different.” John Steinbeck, from The Winter Of Our Discontent

Hello all,
Welcome to June! Hope you’re keeping healthy and happy. We are all keeping well here at OB, and are looking forward to seeing you soon. Loads to get involved with this month – so get reading!

When are we opening?
As you may know, many non-essential businesses are due to re-open on June 15th – we will not be opening on this date. We want to ensure we can keep you and our team as safe as we possibly can, so we’ll only be re-opening our doors when we are certain we can achieve this.
We have a strong action plan lined up, and we’ll be posting all about the measures we will be taking on the blog on our website, when we’ve got it nailed.
Thank you for being patient.
In the meantime our staff hours are as previous (10am-4pm Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat) and we still need your support, so please do keep ordering with us online.

OB voucher match-funding
Thank you so much to all who have bought OB vouchers so far! We’re loving watching the numbers increase on the crowdfunder website! There’s still time to support us, as this campaign runs until June 18th – hurry team!

Independent Bookshop Week!
June 20th-27th is Independent Bookshop Week and we’re giving away a £20 OB voucher to celebrate! All you need to do is share on Twitter why you love supporting us here at October Books using the hashtag #indiebookshopweek. We’ll pick a winner at the end of the week.
This is a great way of spreading the word about what we do, will highlight how cool indie bookshops are and I’m certain your tweets will lift our spirits no end!

Keep on keeping on people.
Big love to you all, from all in the OB team.

Lots to choose from!

Online Get Together #3 – Bring Your Own Book!

Wednesday 17th June at 7pm

We are having a social evening and you’re all welcome!

This is a book group with a difference! We are asking you to BYOB (Bring Your Own Book… and a bottle if you like!) so we can share inspiration we have found between the pages of our favourite books and raise a glass together. What are you reading at the moment?

The session will run for 1hr max and we do look forward to seeing you there.

The Space Between Black And White by Esuantsiwa Jane Goldsmith

Thursday 25th June at 7pm

Join Esua Jane Goldsmith (Esua) via ZOOM as she talks about her memoir ‘The Space Between Black And White’, for Independent Bookshop Week

Esua will speak about her inner journey of self-discovery growing up mixed-race in Britain, and the truths that could help a growing community of mixed-race people struggling to find their own space in the world.

Esuantsiwa Jane Goldsmith was raised in 1950s London in a white, working-class family – her education in racial politics was immediate and personal. From Britain and Scandinavia to Italy and Tanzania, she tackled inequality where she saw it, establishing an inspiring legacy in Women’s Lib and Black Power movements. A feminist and political activist, she works with over 100 organisations on five continents as a dynamic facilitator and strategist.

Conversations From Southampton

Tuesday 30th June at 7pm

To accompany the Conversations From Calais exhibition(we are working out how to share this with you!) we are very proud to welcome Nicola Walters from Southampton Action, and Mike Brown from Clear, who will be talking about the work they do supporting refugees in our City and further afield.

The exhibition aims to re-humanise those affected by the refugee crisis by using public space to share conversations volunteers have had with migrants met in Calais. The project aims to take over public space, commemorate these voices and inspire social change.

Sustainable(ish) by Jen Gale

Thursday 2nd July at 7pm

Join Jen Gale via ZOOM to learn how to fit sustainable living into your life, in a way that works for you.

The Sustainable(ish) Living Guide covers every aspect of our lives from the stuff we buy and the food we eat, to how we travel, work, and celebrate. Jen Gale gives practical, down to earth ideas to slot into your daily life, alongside a gentle kick up the butt to put it into action. Learn how to change your impact without radically changing your life and figure out the small steps you can make that will add up to make a big difference.

Jen is ordinary mum of two whose life changed when she cajoled the family into a year of buying nothing new. She recognised the power that we have to make a difference to the things we care about, by learning about the impact of our daily choices, and figuring out easy swaps and changes. Jen lives in Wiltshire where she writes and podcasts about all things Sustainable(ish).

Register via Eventbrite for instructions to join your ZOOM event. All events are free entry, but if you’d like to sling October Books a donation, please do.
