CRIME is on the rise in Southampton, the latest figures show.

In the month of December, 3,110 incidents were reported in the city – up from 2,382 the previous month.

Crimes of violent and sexual nature continue to surge and remain the most-reported by a long way.

Data shows that 1,323 cases of this nature were reported in December, up from 1,031 in November.

In total there were 255 anti-social behaviour incidents; 349 public order cases; 234 criminal damage and arson; 159 burglaries; 172 other thefts; 178 vehicle crimes; 84 drug related incidents; 160 cases of shoplifting; 49 bicycle thefts; 37 in the category of possessing weapons; 38 robberies; 27 thefts from a person; and 41 ‘other crimes’.

Out of all the reports, 1,986 were still awaiting an outcome by the time December ended.

In 573 cases, a suspect could not be identified.
