The site of the official gallows on Southampton Common, last used on July 27th 1785 – see below

The official gallows in Southampton were located at the northern end of the Common, near the site of the reservoir. The last execution was on July 27th 1785. At his trial on July 9th William Sawyer was found guilty of stealing from his former employer, Mrs Bagnell, he had stolen cutlery and jewellery.
