This is a very interesting historical account by Matt Davey from The Echo of The Phoenix Film Society, “Southampton’s Oldest Film Society” which was founded in 1931

The Phoenix is run as a charity by volunteers and showcases the best of world cinema with 26 films screened each year. It has more than 150 members that meet weekly on Wednesdays at 7.30pm during University term time, at the University of Southampton Students’ Union cinema. The cinema has 225 “comfy, fully raked” seats and “cinema-standard digital projection with surround sound”.
