Southampton Demonstrations: Key individual networks (KINS) update from A/Inspector Richards, Southampton North Neighbourhood Policing Team – Monday 12 January 2026
Posted by Highfield Residents' Association on Jan 12, 2026 in News | 0 commentsGood Afternoon.
I am writing to provide an update on recent protest-related activity in the Portswood area.
Thursday 8 January 2026
On this date, a protest initially gathered outside Highfield House Hotel before moving to the area outside Highfield Community Centre, coinciding with the area’s first PACT meeting of the year.
It became apparent that some attendees had been informed that the PACT meeting would involve discussion about the hotel and recent protests. This was not the case, and Hampshire Constabulary did not issue any information or flyers suggesting this would form part of the agenda. The meeting was delivered with a set agenda, although officers sought to facilitate questions under Any Other Business where appropriate.
Hampshire Constabulary remains neutral in matters of public debate and decisions regarding the use of Highfield House Hotel do not fall within police remit. Our role is to uphold public safety, support lawful protest, and protect the rights of all individuals, including those directly affected by such activity.
On Friday 9 January 2026
A further demonstration took place outside Highfield House Hotel, involving both protesters and counter‑protesters. Officers were present throughout
Sunday 11 January 2026
As protests in this area have previously taken place on Sundays, police resources were in place as a precaution should a spontaneous demonstration occur. No protest groups attended, and a small counter‑presence dispersed shortly after arrival.
I can confirm that no arrests were made on any of the above dates. A Section 34 dispersal power had been pre‑authorised to assist with managing the events; however, there was no requirement to use this or any additional police powers.
We recognise the impact that repeated protest activity can have on communities. Neighbourhood officers will continue to engage locally, listen to concerns, and provide reassurance while monitoring the situation closely.
If you have any concerns or receive further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via:

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and feedback during the recent protest activity.
