Latest update message from Southampton Police Commander, Chief Inspector Charlie Ilderton – 16 June 2026
Posted by Highfield Residents' Association on Jun 16, 2026 in Crime Incidents, Important Police Communications, News | 0 comments“Good Morning,
We want to reassure you that we are fully aware of the planned protest activity in Southampton this week, including on 17th of June at Highfield House Hotel and on 20th of June at Portswood Police Station.
We understand that events of this nature, alongside recent incidents, may cause genuine concern and uncertainty, particularly for residents, businesses, and places of worship.
Please be assured that comprehensive and proportionate policing plans are in place, with a clear focus on –
- Keeping people safe
- Maintaining order and minimising disruption
- Protecting vulnerable locations and communities
You will see an increased and visible policing presence in the relevant areas. This is intentional and aimed at providing reassurance, enabling early intervention where necessary, and ensuring a swift response to any issues.
Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be actively engaging with community leaders, faith groups, businesses, and residents to ensure concerns are heard and addressed. We are also working closely with partners to monitor community impact and respond quickly to any emerging issues.
Following the disorder earlier this month, I also want to provide reassurance that robust enforcement action has been taken. Over 20 individuals have been charged with violent disorder, alongside further charges including affray, assault on an emergency worker, and sending threatening communications. A number of those involved have already been sentenced, receiving over 20 years’ imprisonment in total. The investigation remains ongoing, with further arrests planned.
We remain committed to supporting our communities, maintaining confidence, and taking decisive action where necessary to protect all those who live and work in Southampton.
We will provide a further update following the protest on 17th of June. In the meantime, if you have any concerns or would like to speak with your local policing team, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you for your continued support.
Chief Inspector 20624 Charlie Ilderton
Southampton District”
