Communication from Chief Inspector Ilderton: Update and reassurance regarding recent and upcoming protest activity in Southampton – 18 June 2026

“Good Afternoon,

I am writing to provide an update and reassurance regarding recent and upcoming protest activity in Southampton.

A protest took place on 17th June outside Highfield House Hotel. These events occur periodically at this location, and ahead of the protest our Neighbourhood Policing Teams engaged with local communities.

Approximately 30 protestors and 60 counter protestors attended. The counter protest was silent and peaceful, and there was no march.

The protest concluded safely with no disorder and no need for dispersal powers. Two arrests were made in relation to an inappropriate sign and driving offences.

As per previous communications a further protest is planned for the 20th June at 1300 hours in Portswood.

Please be assured that comprehensive and proportionate policing plans are in place, with a focus on –

  • Keeping people safe
  • Maintaining order and minimising disruption
  • Protecting communities and vulnerable locations

Under Section 12 of the Public Order Act conditions have been put in place to manage the route of the protest. This has been carefully considered to reduce impact and risk where possible, although we appreciate this will not remove disruption entirely.

The agreed route will be shared within the requirements to organisers. But I can confirm it avoids key areas of concern.

There will be a significant and visible policing presence, including specialist officers and additional resources from other forces. This is intended to provide reassurance to communities and ensure a swift response to any issues.

Neighbourhood Policing Teams will continue to engage –

  • Before the event, through patrols and community contact including door knocking and letter drops
  • During the event, with officers present locally
  • After the event, providing reassurance and follow up

We are also working closely with partners to understand and respond quickly to any emerging concerns.

Following disorder earlier this month, there has been substantial enforcement activity including –

  • 32 arrests and 25 charges
  • 24 individuals remanded in custody
  • 13 sentenced to a total of over 34 years’ imprisonment
  • Further cases progressing, with additional suspects identified

This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to taking action where criminality occurs.

We would ask for your continued support in helping to reassure your communities. Your role in sharing calm, clear messaging is vital.

Please continue to share any concerns or information with your local policing teams so that we can respond quickly.

Thank you for your continued support.
