Council action on “No BBQs and No Fires” on The Common

With the temporary ban on disposable BBQs due to current conditions and heightened fire risk and the emergency Government message issued, ” No BBQs and No Fires” signage was installed across the Common last Friday. The Council has also updated their website to reflect this: Barbecues (BBQs) in parks. https://www.southampton.gov.uk/…/barbecues-bbqs-in-parks/

Lead Ranger Dawn Bannatyne, Lead Ranger, says:

“We are hopeful that the combination of clear signage, public messaging and the temporary restrictions will have a significant impact on reducing BBQ use and the associated fire risk on the Common. Even before this recent ban there has been a noticeable reduction in BBQs on the Common over the last couple of weeks.”

Help prevent wildfires this summer
With the continued hot, dry weather, the risk of fire is extremely high. The Government has temporarily banned the sale of disposable BBQs, and we’re asking residents not to use them at all, even if you already have one.
The recent wildfire in the New Forest is a stark reminder of how quickly fires can spread and the pressure they place on emergency services. ???? While that fire wasn’t caused by a BBQ, it highlights why we all need to take extra care.
Please help by:
???? Not using disposable BBQs
???? Fully extinguishing cigarettes and never dropping cigarette ends on the ground
????️ Taking litter home, especially glass, or disposing of it safely
???? Taking extra care in parks, woodland and other dry green spaces
???? Moving to a safe place and calling 999 if you see a fire

Please play your part and don’t take the risk. Skip the BBQ and help keep Southampton safe. ????
