Portswood Broadway Bus-gate Project
The trial Bus-gate project is due to begin in early 2025 with Portswood Broadway closed to through car traffic between 7-10am and 4-7pm Monday to Saturday, between the traffic lights on Highfield Lane and Westridge Road. This will be introduced initially on a 6-month minimum trial basis.
A Steering Group of local representatives was set up in May and there have been two meetings to date. The group agreed Terms of Reference. A further sub-group was established to consider Key Performance Indicators which would be used to measure the success of the trial.

In July, project officers ran several workshops to consider the design of any measures to be introduced in residential Highfield to limit the impact of a potential increase in through traffic when the Broadway is closed. The main area of focus for these workshops was Brookvale Road, Abbotts Way, Russell Place, Westridge Road and Belmont Road. Such measures would be introduced before the start of the trial.
The Steering Group meeting in August reviewed the summary of feedback produced at the ATZ workshops and gave initial reactions to the proposed measures. The next meeting of the group will be on 21 October.
Barbara Claridge, the HRA HonSec, is the Steering Group HRA Representative. HRA Chair, Professor Roger Brown, is acting as Chair of the Steering Group in an independent capacity.
