Court Leet and Beating of the Bounds – dating back to 1549: Your opportunity to raise a local concern! Deadline for submissions, 5pm Monday 28 September 2026

From SSC “This is your last chance this year to take part one of our city’s oldest civic traditions. Court Leet provides a valuable opportunity for any citizen or group of citizens in Southampton to raise local concerns which might not normally come to the attention of the council. This annual event takes place on the first Tuesday after Michaelmas. This year this will be on Tuesday 29 September 2026.

Submit your presentments by 5pm on Monday 28 September for them to be considered in court.

Before Court Leet takes place, children from St Deny’s Primary School will join The Sheriff, the Town Crier and Town Sergeants with ceremonial regalia to walk the short distance from the Bargate to Catchcold Tower. The children will whip the medieval tower with willow wands. The ceremony refers back to days before maps were common, when walking the Parish boundaries was a necessary part of ensuring that the younger generation knew where boundary stones lie.

This is an ancient part of our city’s history and all are welcome to attend.”
