Welcome to the new look weekly email which helps to keep you informed of what is happening each week for those living with dementia in Southampton. Anything extra happening will appear at the top, then we’ll have our Memory Cafés happening for that week. At the bottom we will also include information of other regular Cafés and events that are open to everyone but are not organised by Caraway.
You’ll notice we’ve a new Café added to our list, Harmony Café at Weston. This is our re-named gathering, open to all and you can be sure of a warm welcome. Check out the details for Wednesday!
Do send us your feedback and keep in touch with any ‘extras’ happening that would be of interest to others living with dementia.
Best wishes,
Ros, Jo, Katherine, Dave & Karen and all our Café leads

ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY VISITS CARAWAY!
The Archbishop of Canterbury visited Sholing Memory Cafe and Carers Course on Saturday, 26th October, one of the eight memory cafes that happen around Southampton each month, supported by 12 Chaplains and 80 volunteers.
It was a great honour to be selected for the Archbishop to come to meet people living with dementia, and their carers. The aim of the visit was that the Archbishop wanted to get into conversation with and hear the stories of our attendees, and he did just that. Coming with several others, including Bishop Philip of Winchester, the Archbishop’s Assistant and 2 photographers, many many conversations were had. He did a jigsaw with one person, looked at photographs of the childhood of another one, and was speaking French to another couple who were French.

After talking to people on each table, the Archbishop come through to a mini session of the Carers Course in the church. The theme was about moving along the journey of many losses and stresses, and we looked at taking small steps to improve quality of life for both carer and person with dementia, and also of acceptance, recognising that there is a place of despair involved too. The Archbishop then spoke to the carers and shared how he had felt as a son looking after an alcoholic father, how alone he felt, and he encouraged the carers and appreciated the support given to them. He also reflected on the process of bargaining, despair and acceptance, applying this to Jesus’ experiences in the time leading up to his death. A special afternoon for all.
Margaret Hague, one of our Chaplains, said:
“I felt quite touched by the afternoon and it had quite an impact on me. I was really taken with the Archbishop’s humility and the fact that he was so ‘in the moment’ when asked to pray at the end of the Carer’s session. The way he talked about his own experience and about Jesus – and the way he affirmed the work of Caraway was just so special. It was a pleasure to be there.”
