From Hampshire Alert / Hampshire and IOW Constabulary: Winter burglary crime prevention advice for Southampton residents

All info courtesy of Hampshire Alert and Hampshire and IOW Constabulary

“As winter draws in, home security is important to deter opportunistic burglars. Opportunity plays a big role in enabling crimes to be committed, particularly burglaries. Most domestic burglaries are committed by opportunists. Criminals will look for homes that:

  • Seem unoccupied
  • Have little or no apparent security
  • Have doors or windows left open or
  •  Where they think they won’t be seen

We’re working hard to prevent burglary in our communities, but here are some things to think about:

  • Make sure your home is secure when you go out, even if it’s just for a short time.
  • Keep valuables out of sight of windows and keys away from doors where they could be hooked through letterboxes or cat flaps.
  • Think about how to make your home look occupied, especially when it’s dark. Drawing curtains, security lighting or video doorbells, and things like timer switches for electrical items can all help to deter burglars.

Take a look at our useful burglary prevention checklist to double-check you have left your home safe when you walk out your front door, or click here for more crime prevention advice.

If you become the victim of burglary, or witness suspicious activity in your area, please call us on 101 or report via our website.

Alternatively, you can speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers 100% anonymously if you know of a planned break-in, have witnessed suspicious activity or know who is selling stolen property. You can contact them on 0800 555 111 or by completing their online form.
