One of the most recent Commonwealth War Graves in Southampton Old Cemetery – designated last year
Posted by Highfield Residents' Association on Sep 18, 2020 in Local History | 0 commentsA recent one of many Commonwealth War Graves in Southampton Old Cemetery is that of Kate Trodd, a VAD nurse who died of pneumonia at the age of 20 in 1919, although the author suggests that it might have initially been the ‘Spanish flu’.
There are many Commonwealth War Graves in the Old Cemetery but this one was only designated as such last year with the addition of the central stone plaque. Kate Trodd, or Kit as she was known to her family, was a VAD nurse. She died at the young age of 20 in 1919. Although the cause of death is given as pneumonia, given that this was 1919, it is very possible that the initial illness was ‘Spanish’ flu.
