Councillor John Ransom was one of the biggest ship builders in the town. He lived with his wife in Hawthorn Cottage (now the Wildlife Centre) on the Common and donated the Ransom Fountain, at the bottom of the Avenue, to the town. The Hannah Ransom (named after his wife) was built in Southampton in 1870, photographed at West Bay, Bridport c. 1913.
