10 h  · 1800. Portswood House.Portswood House was built by Giles Stibbert, a retired General in the East India Company, in 1776, overlooking the Itchen. When the tide was up, a wide lake formed in front of the mansion. Speculator George Jones broke up the estate into building plots in 1834, and the house was demolished in 1852 to make way for several smaller houses. The artist is probably J T [Tobias] Young.
